Welcome

Welcome to Girl Detective! For the longest time, Girl Detective has been known only as the "Nancy Drew games fanlisting" but I feel the site has become so much more than a fanlisting. It has a lot more content then most fanlistings and therefore I prefer to call it a "fansite." Because that's exactly what it is. It's a fansite (and fanlisting) for the games Her Interactive has published. There's more to the site now than there was in 2004. With that said this site has been the approved fanlisting for the 3D Adventures of Nancy Drew since April 24, 2004. Not sure what a fanlisting is? Click here to find out.

If you have any comments or questions feel free to contact me. For best viewing results this site was designed using Mozilla Firefox at a resolution of 1024x768. But should look fine in Safari and Opera. This site also uses javascript so if you have a no script application running, please allow this site access. Otherwise, some pages will be inaccessible to you. Enjoy your visit!

Nancy Drew Dossier Launches Today!

Yesterday, Her Interactive posted this blog about Lights, Camera, Curses launching today. There are two trailers on there as well as the new logo (and theme) in the beginning of both trailers. It’s neat, but personally the grainy film logo on the recent games like VEN and HAU is so much better!! I hope they leave that for the original series.

Anyway, Lights, Camera, Curses looks like a fun game. The only thing is well I can’t help but think this story would work out better as being apart of the original series. Another set we’d get to walk around on! We did TV in STFD, but this is a movie set. How much cooler would it be to walk around a movie set in 1st person with an Egyptian theme?! Regardless, this game looks fairly cool and like I said before it’s far superior to other hidden object games. This one looks like it gives you more of a story and more to do than just stare, point, and click. Awesome!

Trailer 1 and Trailer 2 (Be patient while they load. Each trailer is 10mb.)

Oh, this wasn’t posted on the blog, but check out the game page!

Also, here’s an image where you can compare the new Dossier series to the original series!

As for updates on the site. I put up the Lights, Camera, Curses page as well as added it to the sidebar as an upcoming game. Once, we’re able to purchase it I’ll move it to the recently released section.

HER’s new layout preview

HER posted a new blog about the new layout and a preview of it.

And since they are announcing, I guess I will too. I’m working on a new layout myself (had on it the back burner for a few months). Not a new theme that you can choose from the right, but an actual new layout. Problem is I’m having second thoughts about it already. I like it, but I still find this three column layout sufficient. I am still in the process of how it will look on other browsers and resolutions so it might be a while before I actually release it to the public. Stay tuned!

New Game Screenshot!

HER posted a screenshot on the blog of their newest game: Lights, Camera, Curses. Personally, I’m not a big fan of hidden object games except the Mystery Case File games, but this new Nancy game looks far superior to any hidden object game out there.

New logo comparison

So I’m sure you’ve all read the new blog post about the changes HER is making for the website. Personally, I don’t mind the new logo. Although, I think the flag logo is much better suited and more flashy. But the color of this new logo - yuck! The burgundy is a horrible color! Not in general, but for the logo and what the new site might be then yeah it is horrible. Burgundy goes with absolutely nothing. It’s not very flashy or bright so it would be hard to see unless the background of the entire site is white. I just tested it out in photoshop and the logo they have on the site is hard to see on a black background.

Original The new logo on a black background

It’s not a bad design of a logo, but I think it’s way too plain. If they must keep this new logo; please for the love of God get rid of the burgundy! Give it a little more pizazz and change it to gold perhaps? The gold to me says “friendly” whereas the burgundy doesn’t.

Since I was already in photoshop I decided to play around with the logo a bit. As you can see, a golden logo with a shadow, some depth, and a touch of gradient shows up nicely both on a white or black background. Much crisper and more pleasing to the eyes. What do you think?

New logo updated by me. Gold on white background. New logo updated by me. Gold on black background.

I’m not trying to say that HER is a horrible company and that their intentions are completely bad. I understand they have to update things. But the color choice is a bad mistake in my opinion. I know that some folks are fine with it while others think it’s a bad decision. But really take a look at the comparison photos above. What would you rather have? Something you can barely see or something that jumps out at you and says “hey look at me!” Keep in mind that this is a company pulling in profits from how good their games are to how good the presentations on their boxes look. If you were browsing games (ie: had no idea about this company) which logo would grabbed your attention more?
